Real Good Church (May 2015; Volume 4, Issue 5)

June 5-6, 2015, Lutherans from all across New England will gather in Springfield, MA for the Annual New England Synod Assembly. This year’s keynote speaker is the Rev. Molly Phinney Baskette, Pastor of First Church Somerville UCC, and author of “Real Good Church: How our church came back from the dead, and yours can too.

They were a congregation with “30 good members and a bad building” with only six kids in Sunday School and now they average 130 in worship (350 on Easter) and “close to 100” in Sunday School.

Her book does not lay out THE path to turn a church around, but THEIR path. As I read “Real Good Church” during my post-Easter travels, I found the way she highlights the “why” of what they did over the “what” very helpful. She admits it is not a one size fit all deal, but thinking about what they did is a place to start.

I am encouraging our Synod Assembly voting members (David Miller & Shirley Koulopoulos) to read the book before June. However, they are not the only ones who are invited to attend, so I want to encourage you to do the same (read the book and attend the author’s keynote). She will be speaking on Saturday morning (9:00am) and will be available for book signing after her presentation.

There is no one right, let alone easy, way to change how we do and are church in this new global reality, but “Real Good Church” offers a new way of thinking about it and proves that it is possible. No matter how any individual congregation functions, the goal should be to be real and relevant – not boring or fake – and good – not hateful or petty or exclusive. In other words, we are called to communicate through word and deed the positive difference Christ makes in our lives and the world. Easier said than done, but we have absolutely no chance unless we work to do it together.

God Bless,
Pastor Leslie
